Career change in your 40's
I've been a Financial Controller for about 15 years and have recently changed jobs in the hope that it would give me some new enthusiasm. But I have rapidly discovered what I probably knew all along that I fucking hate it. I can tolerate the "accounting" side of the role but despise managing people.

Have any of you on here experienced a similar mid career despair and what did you do about it.

I went a bit doo lally the first time I went to California in 09... at the top of Glacier point in Yosemite National Park I thought to myself.... it just does not get any better than this... and in the next thought it was... shit I got another 20 years in this shit job... and that thought built for the next 3 or 4 months... not good for me and not good for the people I worked with... decided to move jobs.. but everything I wanted to do was shit paid... I could not afford to take a 50/60% wage cut it was as simple as that... done a lot of self help therapy and believe it not getting the dog worked a treat... I would not say i'm happy now but the job is the end to a means... I take one day at a time rather than looking at 20 years like I did... oh I returned to Glacier Point this August just gone... a sort of exorcism of sorts...

Life is too short for doing a shit job.

Some people actually really enjoy their jobs you know! Worth any salary you could earn sucking corporate helmet anywhere else.

Re: Career change in your 40's
Call me a miserable old bastard (correct), but once into my 40s, I was unable to muster much enthusiasm for anything, let alone a career change.

It's why employers really want bright, young things. They're much easier to fool into thinking that the company is great and has their best interests at heart, and will therefore work harder and longer, and follow orders blindly (Herr Colonel).

Yes, I was exactly like you 12 years ago. I managed to negotiate a redundancy deal then I did a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (post 16). I then got a job as an accounting lecturer at a university. With a professional accountancy qualification, it was relatively easy to get a job in Higher Education then. Now, a lot of universities will expect you to have a PhD though but there's still Further Education colleges to consider.

Re: Career change in your 40's
Been there as well, hated the London commute chasing money and eventually at 46 got out and managed to work for myself from home on an 'if it suits me' basis, but I'm in still the same un-enjoyable sector.

The only thing Ive seen recently that I thought I'd have a go at is an airport operations job working in the aircraft de-icing team - spraying antifreeze on jets prior to take-off, from a high- power hose sat in a cherry picker canopy!

Fuck knows why I liked the idea of it, but the £8.50 on hour soon cleared my head.

I have too.
I am a programmer and ended up managing as well as developing and doing a bit project management on the side. Was also in an industry I hated and the commute to London pissed me off even more.
Five years ago I had had enough one morning, went for a smoke and a think and resigned at lunch time having decided to go and the bit I did enjoy and was actually good at which is programming and leaving the tedious meeting behind. Now work as a web developer full time locally and happy at work for the first time in ages.

Re: Career change in your 40's
At 36 I decided to become a teacher. I completed the one year training and accepted a job then resigned before I had actually started the job because I realised what a shot, thankless job it was. Went back to day job at lower level so lost several years in career. Only 3 years later I've got back to same salary. Realised that I'm good in this field so no longer want to try the greener grass elsewhere

I chose to do my passions so never had this problem but seen several people either commit suicide or go on drugs.

Always do your passions. Nothing else.

When I say "only three years" I mean that in a negative way. Was a bad decision in lots of ways. Wish I hadn't changed.

Re: Career change in your 40's
why do you despise managing people? I enjoy seeing people grow and develop under my tutelage. plus finally people laugh at my jokes.

in all seriousness in the same boat although only 37. been an FC for a few years now and struggle with motivation. however I see mates working fucking hard for long hours and I think life is too important for wasting it in the office. my aim is fd then cfo/md ideally.

Blokes I know was a solicitor then trained to become an airline pilot for BA. Worked out well for him but he says that looking back it was a mental decision and if he'd known how mental it was he'd never have taken the step
